[13] The brotherhood of the “Compagnons du Devoir” harkens back to the medieval guilds. The apprentices travel across France to learn their craft (masonry, carpentry, etc…) with various “masters” of their trade. The apprenticeship continues to be conceived as an inner training in character and moral development, as much as in excellence of workmanship.

[15] See The Temple Legend, by Rudolph Steiner (Cf. in particular ed. note p. 346-350) for details of this ultimate test to Hiram-Abiff’s mastery of metallic fire. In his jealousy for the Queen of Sheba’s nascent love for the architect, the legend tells that Solomon plotted, with the help of three fellow-craftsmen envious of Hiram, to turn the casting of the brazen sea “which was to raise the glory of Hiram to its utmost height,” into a failure. When, on the appointed day,”the burning mass ran over the edges of the mould”, all fled from the advancing stream of fire. Responding to the voice of Tubal-Cain which invited him in, Hiram-Abiff threw himself in the furnace where he was introduced into the “sanctuary of fire” and received Tubal-Cain’s hammer with which he was able to complete the work. “And the dawn saw the great mass of bronze cast”. (Italics are used to underline the themes of human passions woven within this picture of an initiation into the intimate mastery of fire).
